Middlebury is close to Burlington International Airport, just 50 minutes' drive to the north on US-7. If coming from Montpelier, it's a one-hour-and-20-minute drive along VT-17. Close to the Canadian border, it's also easily reached from Montreal by Greyhound.

The edge of Green Mountain National Forest is a short drive from Downtown Middlebury. This is a superb place for hiking, cycling, and fishing among the splendor of Vermont's natural scenery. Alternatively, closer to town are a number of smaller wooded areas. These include Battell Woods and Chipman Hill Park, ideal for shorter walks and exploring. Ralph Myhre Golf Course is a public 18-hole course close to Middlebury.
