The city's biggest attraction is the Original Mast General Store, a gem dating back to the 1880s where you can buy retro toys, speckled dishware and candy-stuffed barrels among other bric-a-brac. The Mast Store Knife Shop meanwhile features 500 types of knifes, axes and machetes. Also worth visiting is the Gothic Revival-style Valle Crucis Episcopal Mission, housed in the Valle Crucis Historic District. It now functions as the Valle Crucis Conference Center.
Held each May, the Annual Valle Crucis Park Auction sees artworks, antiques and furniture go under the hammer. Summer kicks off with the century-old Blood, Sweat and Gears bicycle ride around Watauga County. This is followed by Music in the Valle, held from May through September. A typical community event is the Valle Crucis Punkin Festival, held each October. Bake sales, live music and old-fashioned games are on throughout the day.
