HomeToGo’s 2021 Ski Season Report

Please Note: COVID-19 is impacting travel plans right now. Plan your trips responsibly and make sure to follow any government safety guidelines for travel

How has ski travel changed in 2021? There’s no doubt that this year’s ski season is different. From Bolton Valley to Beaver Creek, ski areas across the country are following measures set by state and local health officials to operate as safely as possible. Instead of après-ski bars and crowded cafeterias, skiers will find distanced lift lines, designated routes, and ski capacity limits.

Looking beyond operating and safety measures, HomeToGo wanted to understand the resulting travel trends and prices at America’s most popular ski destinations, to see how skiers and ski areas are adapting to this uncertain ski season.

Ski Accommodation Trends

Based on booking data for homes within a 2 mile radius of the country’s most searched ski areas, HomeToGo compared homes that are being booked with those which are seen but not booked, to uncover ski traveler preferences and behaviors.

Slopeside homes pique skiers’ interest

The ideal ski vacation home is one where you can walk to the lifts with your boots on, or better yet, strapped into your skis. This holds true for 2021 as homes within half a mile of the ski lift are twice as likely to be booked compared to homes 1-2 miles farther afield.

Due to reduced capacities at lodges, more skiers are looking for private places to eat their lunches or dine off the hill. Some mountains have also added more outdoor dining, reserved parking, and portable toilets to help skiers stay socially distanced.

Ski cabins and houses see a surge in share of bookings

Cabins and vacation houses have seen an annual increase of 345%* in their share of bookings on HomeToGo, as travelers seek more privacy and less interest in shared accommodations, including hotels (-7%) and holiday apartments (-12%).

‘Home away from home’ amenities matter more than ever

This year, more people have grown accustomed to cooking their own meals and spending time at home. Therefore, we see more ski travelers looking for homely comforts in terms of amenities and open spaces offered at their vacation rentals; like balconies or terraces (+24.7%), as well as fireplaces (+34.7%), internet access (+11.8%), and kid-friendly conveniences like cribs, strollers, and high chairs (+26.8%).

Fully equipped kitchens are also in high demand among skiers this year, especially when it comes to those offering freezers and dishwashers, which have seen a significant increase in appeal this year.

Shorter getaways and last-minute ski trips

Continuing the trend HomeToGo observed this summer, more skiers are booking last minute trips. The time between booking and check-in has dropped by -42% compared to last year due to the uncertainty of 2021 travel and changing local regulations.

Although many travelers might be booking their accommodations last-minute, ski passes should be reserved well in advance as many resorts have implemented new capacity limits and priority reservation systems for booking lift tickets.

Booking share by weeks to check-in

HomeToGo is also seeing more skiers planning to take shorter ski trips, on average 2-3 nights compared to 3-4 last year. This trend could be a result of the higher share of domestic and local skiers visiting the mountains this year.

How HomeToGo Produced this Report

Ranking: The 55 ski resorts were selected based on the most searched ski destinations on HomeToGo for the 2021 season. Prices for lift passes were collected from the ski area websites. The lift pass price is for a full day’s skiing for an adult on a typical Saturday this season, outside of peak periods. These prices were researched in December of 2020 and may include discounts that are offered to customers who buy in advance.

The accommodation price is the average price per person to stay in a 4-person vacation rental found on HomeToGo within 2 miles of the ski area, for one night between the dates of December 1, 2020 and April 20, 2021.

All prices in USD. Please note that this is a forecast and that prices may change between now and the upcoming season. Prices exclude sales tax.

Trends: Booking trends are based on booking activity observed for users who booked within 2 miles of a ski lift and a check-in from November 23 to April 19 of 2019-20 / 2020-21. Traveler preference was determined by comparing homes that were booked vs those which are seen but not booked.
