On the shores of the Choke Canyon Reservoir, there is plenty to see and do near the water. Choke Canyon State Park cabins make it easy to hit the trails early, with the opportunity to spot deer, coyotes, possums, raccoons, and more wildlife along the way. The park is also home to alligators, so be sure to check out alligator safety tips on the park's website or at the headquarters. Guided bird watching tours are also held on certain days.

  • 1. Calliham Unit

    The 6.34mi. trail running through this unit is great for picnicking, boating, wildlife viewing, and has different playgrounds. It is also pet friendly, though dogs should be leashed.

  • 2. South Shore Unit

    The day use unit of the park is ideal for wildlife spotting, bird watching, and picnicking.

  • 3. North Shore Unit

    With terrain ranging from eroded, to rocky, to gently rolling bushland, there's much to see on the North Shore. Furthermore, this area is even more interesting, as it supports horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and boating.

    With over 200 avian species, including falcons and Mexican eagles, either calling the park home or passing through on their migratory flights, you and your family will have a lot of birds to watch, document, and learn about. The American Birding Association has even recognized the park for its importance to bird watchers. Birding also allows you to observe other wild animals in the park, such as alligators and deer.

  • 2. Sports

    In the Calliham unit, you'll find fields and facilities for soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Younger children will also enjoy simply having ample room to run and play.

  • 3. Fishing

    You do not need a licence to fish from shore within the park, and the reservoir is home to largemouth bass and catfish, among other species. There are boat ramps in both units of Choke Canyon State Park, so if you've come equipped, you can easily get out on the water to start angling. In addition, Calliham has a fish cleaning shelter as well as a rock jetty.
