Phoenix is a sunny, sprawling city, and the easiest way to get around is by car, but there are also several public transportation options. Once there, you should make the most of beautiful nearby nature as well as the city's cultural scene.
The nearest airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and somewhat farther away is Glendale Municipal Airport. From Phoenix Sky Harbor, you can take the Valley Metro light rail to the University of Phoenix, in case you're not renting a car while in town.
Phoenix offers a variety of activities. World War II buffs can take an open cockpit tour in the Commemorative Air Force Museum. The Westgate Entertainment District is a one-stop entertainment area, with ample shopping, restaurants, live music on the weekends, and movie theaters. The Desert Botanical Garden is a unique, 50 acre haven for desert plants and wildflowers. Close to the city's downtown, you can hike through Papago Park, home to beautiful red butte formations.
Camelback Mountain is one of the Phoenix area's most famous sights. Just keep in mind that the two hikes to the top are both rated extremely difficult. To learn more about the area, visit the Heard Museum, which celebrates the art and culture of American Indians of the Southwest in a beautiful setting. For a view of some contemporary art, head to Roosevelt Row, the city's main arts district which can be enjoyed on foot.
