Three emerging trends for U.S. travelers for the summer of 2025

HomeToGo’s latest search data reveals three standout travel trends set to shape summer 2025 for U.S. travelers. This summer, Americans are eagerly planning European escapes to uncover the continent’s diverse treasures, learning to explore like locals, and showing a growing interest in inland destinations across the U.S.

Trend #1: European escapes lead the way

Europe continues to capture the hearts of U.S. travelers, accounting for 100% of the top ten most-searched countries and 80% of the top ten most-searched destinations for summer 2025. London, England takes the crown as the most sought-after destination, followed by Sardinia, Italy, and Bali, Indonesia—the latter standing out as one of only two non-European entries on the list. Europe also represents 60% of the top ten trending countries and 100% of the top ten trending international destinations. Alicante, Spain (+552% search increase YoY), Crete, Greece (+390% YoY), and Isla de Lanzarote, Spain (+384% YoY) lead the way, highlighting a growing demand for picturesque escapes in Europe’s coastal and island destinations.

Trend #2: American travelers discover Europe’s longtime favorites

A shift in traveler preferences is driving U.S. vacationers to explore Europe like locals, as they increasingly opt for destinations beloved by Europeans rather than hotspots traditionally popular among American tourists. Majorca, Spain, and Menorca, Spain (+333% YoY)—now ranked as the fourth most-searched and trending summer destinations respectively—have long been favorites among Europeans but are often overshadowed in the U.S. by their famous neighbor, Ibiza. Similarly, Lake Garda, Italy, ranked ninth, is now emerging as an alternative to the ever-popular Lake Como. On the trending list, Greece’s lesser-known islands are making waves. Naxos (+327% YoY), Lefkada (+189% YoY), and Zakynthos (+175% YoY) are fast becoming must-visit spots for those seeking the allure of Greek island life—without the American crowds in Santorini or Mykonos. Meanwhile, interest in Brittany, France (+272% YoY) is rising to catch up with areas such as  the glamorous French Riviera, attracting U.S. travelers with its rugged coastline and authentic charm.

Trend #3: Rising interest in inland destinations across the U.S.

While beaches and coastal locations remain favorites for domestic U.S. summer travel, increased interest in inland destinations is emerging, with Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Tennessee climbing into the ranking of top ten most-searched states for 2025. This is even more pronounced when looking at the list of the trending states, in which eight of the top ten are landlocked. Phoenix, Arizona (+562% YoY) is ranked first, followed by other inland gems including Atlanta, Georgia (+156% YoY), Saugatuck, Michigan (+143% YoY), Lake George, New York (+120% YoY), and Whitefish, Montana (+86% YoY). The statistics suggest that, even while the high demand for oceanside stays prevails, more Americans are setting out in search of breathtaking lakes, mountain views, or vibrant city experiences.

Focus on AI

U.S. vacationers are also further embracing AI tools to simplify and enhance their summer travel planning and booking experiences. In HomeToGo’s 2025 Travel Survey, more than half of U.S. respondents (53%) said they will definitely use (29.6%) or likely use (23.4%) AI for travel planning in 2025. HomeToGo is meeting this demand with its conversational AI tools, including AI Mode, an AI-powered travel planner, and AI Sunny, an AI-powered travel assistant, to offer a seamless experience that feels as natural as chatting with a well-traveled friend. Complementing these tools are HomeToGo’s integrated AI features, such as Smart AI Reviews and Smart AI Offer Summaries, which provide travelers with concise insights on guest feedback and key property amenities to streamline the decision-making process.
