Attractions

Attractions in Suffolk

Lace up some comfortable shoes and get moving, because there’s much to see in Suffolk. Start your adventure in Bury St Edmunds, a historic market town that has around 1,000 years of history under its belt.

One of the the town’s best attractions is the internationally renowned Abbey Gardens, a stunning series of gardens built on the site of the old Benedictine Abbey. Bury St Edmunds Cathedral overlooks a rose garden, an aviary, a play area and some 20,000 plants in the central space alone. As this is a market town, make sure you visit the Bury St Edmunds Weekly Street Market, which in fact takes place twice a week.

Elsewhere, take a stroll around beautiful Lavenham, an excellently preserved medieval town with more than 300 timber-framed buildings dating back to the 15th century. The best way to see the town is on foot. Walking around, you’ll pass attractions such as the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which dates back to 1530, and the filming locations for such productions as Witchfinder General, Lovejoy and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part I.

The 1165-built Orford Castle is another very well-preserved Suffolk landmark. Located just outside Ipswich, it is a small but fascinating slice of history also affording great views of Orford Ness.

Local Events

Suffolk’s annual events

Suffolk hosts many great events throughout the year, and with a bit of luck there’ll be one taking place during your stay at a Suffolk vacation home. These events cover everything from horse racing to food and outdoor pursuits.

Newmarket Racecourse is one of the most famous in the country, hosting many races between April and November. If you can, try and attend the Newmarket July Festival. The premier meet of the year is a very stylish and fun affair. Dress smartly and enjoy a few glasses of champagne over the course of the three-day event.

Immerse yourself in Suffolk’s great outdoors at the Suffolk Walking Festival, which takes place between May and June each year. The festival consists of group walks of varying athletic difficulty and setting. Walk along the coast, through towns and villages, in the countryside, perhaps even with your dog by your side. You can choose a gentle 1-6km stroll, a mid-length 8-16km trek or really place yourself among the elite walkers in the country by participating in one of the 16km+ expeditions. Whatever you choose, you’ll love the good company and even better surroundings.

There are also many regional food and drink festivals that take place throughout the year, so keep an eye on the local festival calendar during your stay at Suffolk vacation rentals. Locally produced cheese, fruit, vegetables and meat are all showcased, as are many delicious real ales and ciders from local brewers.
