Art & Culture

Salento, Florence of the South

The Baroque architecture of this ancient town situated on a limestone peninsula dividing the Ionian and Adriatic seas reflects its grand and historic cultural landscape. Considered by some to be the 'Florence of the south', Salento is part of Puglia's growing reputation as a low-key alternative to the Amalfi coast. Nearby Brindisi is trendier but Salento is more reflective of old style Italian glamour. Visit the Unesco World Heritage Site of Castel del Monte, a perfect octagon visible for miles, or the Sanctuario di San Michele for an insight into Puglia's rich history as a place of pilgrimmage.
