Salcombe's beaches are clean, sandy, and plentiful, so bring your flip-flops and towels, take a blissful dip in cool waters and relax in the sun. There are carparks at most beaches, but regular ferry boats run from the town harbour, just minutes from your Salcombe vacation home, over to the main beach (5 min) and a larger one further up the coast (15-20 min). It’s not free but well worth it – especially if you’re visiting with little ones. Don’t be afraid to find you own cove if you’re feeling more adventurous.
Need to stretch your legs? At Salcombe’s information center you’ll be provided with a plethora of walks suiting families, keen hikers, and for the more experienced athletes among us. Every path incorporates the magnificent South West Coastal Path. Otherwise have a gentle meander through Salcombe’s streets. They are brimming with individual boutiques, galleries of local artists, cafes and ice cream shops, and an award-winning fudge and chocolate shop, Roly’s fudge pantry.
Overbeck’s garden and museum is an absolute must-see. A National Trust property, the house and gardens sit on top of the cliff face. Due to its warm micro-climate, it hosts fascinating semi-tropical gardens. Perfect for a game of hide and seek, or for avid gardeners and botanists. Afterwards, sit on the lawn and sample the ultimate British delight: tea with fresh scones and a generous dollop of clotted cream, while taking in the spectacular peninsula.
Feel the need for speed? Don’t miss out on RIB rides around the coast of Salcombe. Additionally, you can take advantage of boat hire and even take a fun boating class.
Further afield, though worth every mile, is Greenway house and gardens. Another National Trust site, it was the vacation home of adored and celebrated writer, Agatha Christie. A fun and enchanting day out, you can find the author’s inspiration for some of her most famous work. Delightful for the whole family!
Find the old spirit of Salcombe with traditional shanty-town singers and a local beer or two in the abundant charismatic pubs so close to your Salcombe vacation rental. The Ferry Inn is worth a visit; sitting on the water’s edge. Feeling a little peckish after your evening meal? By night, the town’s bakery becomes a very popular (and very tasty) creperie.
