Description

Just to the north of Acadia National Park's Schoodic Peninsula, escape to our charming family cottage on the shores of Downeast Maine. A wildlife lover's dream, our guests have enjoyed visits by moose, foxes, seals, eagles, deer and wild rabbits, and steady stream of hummingbirds. Located on a small Maine island, it is easily accessible by car over a causeway. This two bedroom, two bath cottage has a cozy and welcoming ambiance that will make you feel right at home. A fully equipped kitchen invites you to cook at home and, of course, prepare your own lobster feast. Take in the evening performance of the moon and stars while gathering around the outdoor fire pit next to the shore.

The bay is perfect for kayaking and the rocky shore is an enjoyable spot to sit and take in nature, replete with sightings of eagles, loons and seals that call the bay home. Hikers will enjoy climbing Pigeon Hill or a trek through Petit Manan State Park, just a couple of miles down the road. Live Lobsters may be purchased daily from a nearby Lobster Pound, also located on Bar Island.

"Our family had a wonderful time at this home (be sure to follow directions - not GPS - once on the island). We couldn't believe our eyes when we woke up each morning and saw the incredible view. It is a remote and peaceful spot. Our kids (16 & 9) had a blast exploring the shoreline. The basketball hoop was an added bonus! The home felt very private (there are homes on either side but separated by trees). We didn't see one other person while we were there. The kitchen was the most well-stocked of any home that we've rented. We both love to cook/bake and while we didn't get to do much of that, we felt like we could make anything that we wanted. We enjoyed spending time by the firepit and when inside, our favorite place was at the table overlooking the backyard (loved the hummingbirds!). We appreciated the binder of suggestions so much. Definitely stop for groceries in Ellsworth! The home was very clean, beds were comfy, bathrooms were spacious. Cell service was fine. Private Note: Hi, John. Thank you for sharing your home with us. It was such a wonderful place to stay for our first time in Maine. It was just magical there. The only thing we wanted to mention was we couldn't find the games (hope someone didn't take them!). Also, we loved your binder, but maybe add a "check-out" page to the binder with details like what the renter should do and what is not necessary to do. We were rushing and I had to go through my emails to find yours (which were extremely helpful!). We would have written a longer review if we hadn't run out of room. Thank you again. - the Kite-Powell's"

"A cozy home that had obviously nurtured the owner family in lovely fashion. The owner could not have been more helpful and available. The home had everything you need for a short stay. The house was a bit dated - certainly not a five star - but totally comfortable. The view out the front porch of the bay was expansive, only slightly marred by the lobster processing plant across the water one mile away. It was usually quiet on this island with an occasional truck going by on the dirt road to the seafood processing facility nearby. All in all, we enjoyed it although quite expensive in season."

"A very nice down-home cottage to plant your roots for a stay! The owners have opened up their family cottage for travelers to stay, and it feels “just like home”! Very clean, and it has most all amenities you'll need. They recently added a Sprint WiFi hotspot and it worked very well for us — a plus in our books! The surrounding area has lots to offer. Our favorites: Chipman's Wharf (good selection of seafood and fresh and frozen lobster— all to take home to enjoy), Schoodic Point and Winter Harbor/Prospect Harbor. Milbridge (town to the north) with a nice gift shop, adequate grocery store, and lots of local color, and for a nice dining experience, the Crocker House Country Inn. "We has never been to Maine, but always like to go somewhere cool around mid-summer to escape the Southern heat. This cottage was a perfect getaway! Beautifully maintained -the cottage and the setting both are even nicer in person than in pictures. Very comfortable, with a very well provisioned kitchen. The area is very rural, and there are few restaurants close by, so you will need to prepare for that. Large grocery store in Milbridge, and (importantly to me!) many places to buy fresh Lobsters! The scenery in Maine is gorgeous - we spent a few days hiking the area and at Acadia National Park, plus taking boat tours. All in all, the cottage was great, the area was beautiful, and we had a very good time. The owners are easy to deal with, as well."

An hour drive to Bar Harbor to experience Whale Watching, Acadia Natl. Park, restaurants, etc. took place, but the highlight was the downtime hanging around Bar Island. Fresh caught lobster from Dorr Lobster Co. from across the street, local produce stands, the Schoodic pennisula - too much to recall but a memorable and relaxing vacation. We got to watch a fox make his way around outside of the house on another morning. And the birds, and sanctity of the water all around us was simply stunning. The island features gorgeous tree canopied dirt roads that we would walk early morning and at dusk. There is plenty of privacy but when we would happen upon another island neighbor everyone was extremely friendly. The house was extremely well-stocked for anything you might need for cooking (including multiple lobster pots) and we even made fresh blueberry cobbler from berries we picked on the side of the road not far from Millbridge. The views out over the water are unmatched and everything was very accurately described in the ad. We hope to have the opportunity to stay there again in the future and I can HIGHLY recommend this place."

"This is a wonderful, quiet rental right on the ocean. Everything is immaculately clean, with lots of homey touches to make you feel at home as a guest. The view is amazing, and you can sit and watch the seagulls and maybe a seal or porpoise in the ocean outside. Highly recommended!"

"Lobster Lovers Our trip to Maine was a Mother/Daughter bonding experience as well as my birthday present from my mom and we Loved it! The rental was fully stocked! They have everything you need for baking, cooking, and for steaming your lobsters from spices to pots/pans. Plenty of towels and toiletries. Wildlife came right up to the house and the every changing scene outside of the huge windows was amazing! We ate lobster every night that we purchased from Dorr's Lobster for reasonable price. We're already planning out return to trip for next year!"

"Absolutely stunning location and view. House was impeccably clean and kitchen has everything you need. Close to beautiful hiking on Schoodic peninsula. Only downside is lack of wifi and very, very weak cell coverage; there were several instances where this turned to be very impractical."

"Absolutely beautiful home in a remarkable part of Maine. We had coffee in front of the bay and watched Loons dart for fish every morning. Perfect home base for exploring Acadia, but we also enjoyed a number of trails right on the island. Massive and well stocked kitchen let us preparing evening meals at home (grocery about 20 min. away). House was immaculate with two full baths, washer and dryer and tons of books and games. We could not have asked for a better getaway spot for our anniversary trip. Incredible value we highly recommend!"

"What a great little escape we found. Very comfortable cottage, well equipped with everything we needed.... although it took a while to find extra bedding & beach towels! Steps from a wildlife sanctuary...you really feel like you're in the wild here! We saw eagles, moose, deer, and many different types of birds...About an hour from Acadia, but minutes from Petit Manan, you're right in the midst of it all! A separate garage with washer and dryer, perfect get away for small families! Grocery store only minutes away. Flowers planted in the boxes & gardens.... lovely! Come see for yourselves!"

"We had a wonderful time at your place and enjoyed the home and its cottage coziness so very much! The boys said they want to come back again for sure. Our road trip never had a week stay at a cottage on the agenda, but the boys were so happy there & have a lifetime of brother memories made & we could hardly leave! The 12 & 14 year old boys found an abundance of things to do: picked blueberries, rode bikes, collected mussels, night crab collecting at high tide w Flashlights, they hiked around the island several times at low tide and hiked out to kelp piles daily, sponge bob uno was a hit, and we bought lobster from many of the local suppliers and we love Vasquez Mexican for dinner & breakfast. We did enjoy Schoodic peninsula w lunch at Pickled Wrinkle & breakfast at JM Gerrish & Acadia on the 2 days we left the cottage. I loved the heritage Maine bouys so much that I called Heritage Bouy & owner Erik from Norway called me back & told us to come to his house and we could buy a Maine buoy. That was so fun out on Rays point, he and everyone else was so hospitable. Thank you again for a wonderful introduction to Maine and all of your personal touches."

"John's place is a wonderfully quiet retreat along the Maine coast. The view of the bay from the home is wonderful, complete with lobster boats quietly checking their traps and an occasional kayaker. John's home is beautifully provisioned and has everything you would want in the kitchen to make meals and bake. My recommendation is to come prepared with groceries. The setting is to beautiful and relaxing to leave. We enjoyed day hiking in the neighboring Petit Manan (a 15 minute drive from the house). The home is vey clean and beds are comfortable. All in all, a wonderful time in Maine!"

"Absolutely worth the value. Stunning views, amazing cabin in the woods- has everything you'd ever need. We sat outside and enjoyed the view, collected shells at low tide, and hung out in the beautifully decorated cabin in the evening. Wish we could've stayed longer! Hosts were welcoming and so kind."
