Description

Welcome to Poppy's Hideaway, our family getaway, a name provided by our five grandsons. Enjoy a quiet romantic weekend for two or invite friends for a great weekend hangout. River fun, mountain hiking, biking, horseback riding, strolls down the Luray Greenway or take a drive down Skyline Drive; all are within a short distance of the cabin. Our home is 6 miles from downtown Luray and 3 miles from the Shenandoah River Outfitters.

The cabin offers 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, warm cozy amenities, huge yard space and is directly on the Shenandoah River. Purpose built as a vacation cabin, you will not find a more-roomy private river experience than this anywhere in the area. Acres of lawn surround the cabin on all side and there are no neighbors in sight. Hundreds of feet of private shoreline mean you can nap in the hammock, fish or take the canoes out without being bothered by others or hearing the noise or seeing the sight of other neighbors.

One king bed and two queen beds will comfortably sleep six and we have additional bedding for a max of 8. The kitchen offers gas cooking, refrigerator with ice maker, everything you will need for a great meal. If you'd rather cook outside, we've got you covered with both gas and charcoal grills.

On a rainy day, there is still plenty to do inside. Free Wifi internet and satellite TV will keep you connected. There is a landline phone with free local and long distance calling. There are books, board games and movies to rummage through. Everywhere you turn, this house has what you're looking for!

Stunning mountain views and sunsets from the covered porch or enjoy the river views from the sun deck. There is something for everyone and NO traffic, just a relaxing weekend hide-away! Make a huge campfire and tell stories with your friends late into the evening hours!

"Absolutely perfect. The cabin is wonderful! The beds are very comfortable and everything worked as it should. We especially enjoyed the downstairs area and watching baseball in the evening breeze. The puppy loved running in the ample yard and the old dog even got in on the action. The river was as peaceful as ever and we caught a ton of bass. The young adults loved the campfire time in the evenings. The upstairs deck area was perfect for drinking coffee in the mornings. Poppy's Hideaway is one you won't regret! Thank you for sharing this slice of heaven with us! This is a gem of a rental! We absolutely loved it!"

"We absolutely loved staying here. Our dog enjoyed the large yard to run in. We loved the firepit for making smores at night. The house had a beautiful view of the river. Everything was clean, beds were comfortable, and kitchen was perfect. The house was also a 20 min drive to the National Park entrance where we spent most of our days hiking. We would definitely stay here again."

"We loved the weekend at Poppy’s hideaway. The weather was perfect so we were able to spend the days entirely outside on the big lawn, by the river, in the kayaks and on the swings. But even if we’d been stuck inside, it would have been cozy and comfortable enough for all of us. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment for cooking and trailheads were just a short drive away."

"We are not huge complainers and we’re fine with bugs outside the house because that’s part of the point of escaping to the country, but we were frustrated by the number of bugs (boxelder beetles) inside the house. The sliding glass doors on the river side of the house weren’t well sealed, letting dozens of boxelder beetles inside the river-side bedrooms (which included the master bedroom). In addition, the window well of the master also had hundreds of dead boxelder beetles on the inside because the frame of the screen was bent and there was a mud dauber nest (thankfully abandoned) inside the living room slider. We sprayed the sliders on the morning of the second day and were then able to remove the remaining beetles after that, but it was frustrating and was clearly a result of poor maintenance on the sliding glass doors."

"This is our second time staying here. It is a gorgeous cabin on the river. It has a huge yard and direct river access. There is a great fire pit, which we used almost every night, and firewood is provided. The beds are super comfy as is the huge sectional couch in the living room. This cabin has everything you need from bedding, to towels, to a fully outfitted kitchen and laundry. The owners provide paints and brushes for everyone to paint river rocks and add them to the rock garden in front of the house. Under the house is a really great outdoor living area with a television, seating, dining table, sink, fridge, and grills. We loved this cabin. They also supple many games, books, and dvd’s."

"Our second time at Poppy's Cabin. It is just really a lovely place to be. If you are looking for a relaxing place of respite and privacy then this place is for you. It is in a beautiful setting and the cabin itself is really nice and it is clear that whoever built this cabin gave it a lot of thought to placement within the setting and the views were just so nice and tranquil. My family and I spent our days half relaxing and half partaking in all the adventure that nature has to offer in this Shenandoah Valley Setting. We did not want to leave and go back to the day to day rat race back home. It was hard to leave and it was a great escape. Thanks Poppy!"

"We recently stayed at Poppy's for a week with our two young boys. This trip was planned as a way of remembering my dad, who recently passed away. He loved NOTHING more than log cabins and nature in the mountains. I can't even begin to explain how perfect this spot was for us. From the rustic decor, comfy beds (with AMAZING sheets), the river access, the tire-swing, and the fire pit to the close proximity to Sky Line Drive and Luray Caverns and Shenandoah River Outfitters for tubing, it was just perfection! We loved hearing the river flow and watching all the wildlife (lots of birds and deer) constantly moving about. The kids absolutely loved the rock painting set-up, as did I! Definitely would recommend this spot.:)"

"Poppy’s place was great. Only an hour and 20 minutes from NOVA, beautiful property, good spot on the river and an updated and very comfortable home for a family. We had perfect weather but still made great use of the house and the shaded patio under it. Beds and inside are very comfortable and pretty updated. The yard is beautiful, playground and fire pit were awesome for the kids. Btw this could be the perfect spot for an adult only or family. There’s a comfortable setup down by the river for fishing, swimming or just sitting and relaxing. We were early spring so the water outside wasn’t turned on just yet. Would’ve been nice to have the hose and sink working for cleaning up kids and dogs but not a huge deal. We will definitely be going back."

"Poppy's Hideaway is a wonderful house for a vacation. All of the rental arrangements were easy and accurate. We received an email with all the information we needed for our week. The house is in a field by itself so we had privacy. It's on the river so access was easy and I could watch my grandsons playing in the river from the balcony. The house was very clean the beds very comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked. Plus there were canoes, kayaks, life vests, tubes and all sorts of game items. The downstairs is an excellent location to grill and hangout with family. The location is convenient to hiking in the Shenandoah National Park and going into Luray. I would definitely go back."

"We had relatives in from New England for vacation and they had never been in the Shenandoah Valley and our rental with Poppy's Hideaway was a fantastic experience for all of us. Even with 5 adults there was a lot of room to spread out...big decks on the front and back of the cabin made for great early morning coffee and early evening adult beverages. Bedrooms and bathrooms had everything you needed and the beds were quite comfy. Easy On-Easy Off fireplace kept the chill off the living room. Huge space under the house for hanging out including a really nice stereo system that you could hear down to the fire pit; spent one afternoon kayaking and just hanging around the river. The rental team was very easy to work with and everything went smoothly. I've read the comments about the water but it's just not that bad; I would certainly not pass up this cabin based on that. Given it's location by the river, 10 minutes into Luray with grocery shopping and about 20 minutes or so to the Skyline drive it's an ideal location. Also, just outside Luray is a zip line company. Nobody in our group had ever zip lined before and it was a blast so give it a try. We highly recommend Poppy's Hideaway."

"The group of old timers (6) had stayed at Poppy’s Hideway before. We knew that everything at the cabin is exactly what the Rental announced for amenities would be waiting for us. So for a bunch of older guys it was like being at home. All we needed to do was bring our food and drink, but you are so close to Luray you can have food delivered. The kitchen is equipped with are the necessary utensils you need for cooking. You have fishing boats available for fishing or for recreation. My group of guys spend their time relaxing on the river back listening to the river running over the rapids and sipping their beverage of choice. Lots of heavy eyes. The open pit fireplace was a nightly visit to remember stories and adventures that we all have had through our lives and talking about families. Great place to get acquainted with friends and family. We will be back soon."

"Poppy’s Hideaway was a great vacation spot. My husband and I travel every Christmas to a cabin and this was our 5th year of traveling. This cabin was easy to find - as GPS took us straight there. It’s about a 10 minute ride to town, which is perfect for a quick grocery run (Walmart and Food Lion). We have Verizon service and had one bar most of the time. We could receive and make phone calls if needed, but we connected to Wi-Fi and used our phones as needed. The view was perfect all the way around. There were chairs on the decks to sit on. We brought our dog with us and he had lots of room to run and play (there was snow leftover from the day before we arrived) ! The gas fireplace is so easy (a light switch) and warms the house quickly. The house had everything we needed. At first, I didn’t think the master bed would be comfy because it felt hard when I sat on it. But, it slept way better than I imagined! It actually ended up being comfy. I might would suggest a mattress topper, but it’s not a deal breaker. I really liked the flood lights on the outside of the house. They lit up the stairs and yard at night when I had to take my dog outside. We also got to see lots of deer eating in the field beside the house at night. The owners / company is very quick to respond to emails if you have any questions. We also didn’t use any of the firewood and they quickly refunded us that fee. We went to the Luray Caverns & they are a MUST see! In addition, the cabin was only 1 hour and 45 minutes from Washington, DC! We took a day trip to visit the famous spots and drove back. Something we originally didn’t plan, but seeing it wasn’t far away - we decided it was perfect! I would highly suggest this cabin. It’s also very clean and organized."

"Exceptional experience for our family of 2 adults, 2 children, and 1 dog. This property has all the amenities you will need. The private shoreline to the river was easily our favorite part of the property. We floated on inner tubes, caught some fish, and just had fun relaxing in the water. The house itself is very clean. The open bottom area was nice as it provided some cover for rain, while still being outdoors. We used the fire pit to toast marshmallows and plenty of firewood is provided. There are a variety of indoor and outdoor games for some family fun. There is also a table provided with paint that we used to paint our river rock as a souvenir and lasting memory of our stay. We are already planning on our next stay at Poppy’s Hideaway! Thank you."

"Poppy's Hideaway was the perfect escape for our young family during the Covid-19 pandemic. We loved it so much that the moment we returned home, we booked it again! The grounds are spacious and beautiful. The river is stunning and gentle. We walked out into the river the first evening after arrival and were blown away by the mountain scene and sunset. If you need a dose of nature, this is it. My children loved playing in the provided tubes and floating over the "rapid. " Another family was able to come visit for the day and have a barbecue with us thanks to the generous outdoor space below the house. It was the ideal way to safely socialize during Covid-19. My children also enjoyed the provided paints and happily added to the rock garden. The house itself is warm and homey. The master bedroom was romantic and we enjoyed the sounds of the river at night through the screened bedroom window. I only wish the sliding doors had a screen so we could hear more of the river! My children also enjoyed reading the provided books and playing with the toys. The swing set and hammock by the river were a hit as well. We can't wait to return. Because the cabin is so popular we weren't able to get as many nights as we ideally wanted, but we will be getting two vacations this summer instead. Do bring bottled water to drink. The house seems to be on a well system and the water has an unpleasant sulfury smell at times. It didn't bother us for bathing and dishes but we refused to drink it."

"This cabin was all we expected and more. We were a group of 6 adults and 3 kids (ages 3-6) the adults took the bedrooms and the kids camped out in the living room. It worked out perfectly. Several nice sitting areas so your group can spread out if you want. The fans on the porches keep most of the bugs away at night. Having access to the river on site and use of the canoes, kayaks and tubes was so much more than we could have hoped for. The outside shower was a perk to rinse off before going inside. The first day we went up river to canoe down to the cabin then later in the week we launched from the cabin and went down river to the outfitters (parked in the wrong spot but that was our fault and it added to the adventure). The kitchen had most items we needed only missed having a couple things which we made due without. Very nice gas stove and two grills to use outside. Washer and dryer got a workout as we spent everyday in the water. There is a smell to the water in the cabin but that is normal for the area and we were expecting it. We saw deer everyday in the front lawn, spent most of our time between the river and visiting under the cabin. Direct TV was great for the kids when we needed them to settle down for naps or the night. Internet is not great but again we were expecting that. Our Verizon Phone service wasn't bad most of the time."
