Ptarmigan Lodge is an adorable custom log cabin located in a secluded location atop the Valley of the Sun mountains. It is a perfect location for the vacationer looking for a private and wooded location with fabulous views of the white-capped mountains. It is close enough to enjoy shopping and dining in Fairplay, Alma, or Breckenridge, but far enough away to be away from the traffic and noise of the towns. There is a hiking trail and entrance to the National Forest just a few steps away from the driveway. You will enjoy seeing the numerous wildlife in the area too. There are moose, foxes, deer, elk, rabbits, and an occasional bear. Enjoy the spectacular mountain views from the deck. There is also a horseshoe pit for family fun too. The kids will love exploring the area around the cabin.

The home has 3 private bedrooms and two full baths. The bedroom downstairs has a queen bed and a bath with a shower/tub combo. It is at the entry level. On the main level there is a large kitchen, dining room, family room and two bedrooms and one bath. The bath has a walk-in shower. Upstairs there is a huge loft with a flat screen TV which has satellite programming. There is lots of comfy seating for the entire family. There is a desk or study area as well as a full size sofa bed.

The deck has amazing mountain views and views of the forest. You can relax in the big comfortable deck chairs. There is a gas grill provided as well. The parking is off of the road and has plenty of room for 3 or 4 cars and even a small camper or ATV trailer.

Fairplay is called the "Base Camp of the Rockies" because it is near almost every outdoor activity you can think of. There is horseback riding just 15 miles away at the Platte River Ranch. If you like white water rafting, you can go down to the Arkansas River which is only 40 miles away. There are hundreds of hiking trails and many of the famous 14ers are right behind the house like Mt. Sherman, Mt. Democrat, Mt, Bross, Mt. Lincoln, and Quandary. If you are a fisherman, this is the place to go. The Platte River offers Gold medal fishing and there are many lakes as well such as Montgomery Reservoir, Antero, Spinney, 11-Mile, and Jefferson Lake. You can go to a different location every day. In the winter, you will find skiing and boarding at Breckenridge, Keystone, and A-Basin. You can also drive to Copper Mountain and Vail from the home. There is sledding, tubing, ice skating, ice fishing and much more just minutes from the home.

"Our family had an amazing time at the Ptarmigan Lodge. There were 4 adults, 2 kids (10 and 13) and 3 dogs and there was plenty of room for all of us! The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the horseshoe pit and exploring the woods around the property. The area was very quiet and peaceful. We did see a deer hanging out around the cabin for most of the day. We enjoyed the loft with lots of seating for a movie night. The sitting area on the main level was a hit in the evenings where we could sit and enjoy the fire. As it is with many homes, the kitchen and dining room area quickly became the hub for activity and gathering. We were all able to enjoy a paint night, game night and just enjoy meals in the dining area with plenty of space. I cant say enough wonderful things about the property and what a great time our family had. We will definitely be returning. ️ I will note that on the 5th day of our stay the water heater went out. I reached out to the property owners and they were VERY responsive. It required more than a quick reset and someone came out quickly to get it fixed. What more could you ask for?:)"

"Our group consisted of 4 of my daughts, my wife, and my elderly mother in law (with 2 pups). We loved the house and enjoyed the stay. We found lots of good hiking nearby (one really good one is a half mile away). Staying at this high of elevation definitely took a toll on us as Midwesterners. That was a known factor up front but definitelycomes into play more than we have noted at the 10,000 and 9,000 ranges we normally sleep at. I would definitely recommend this home to others. It was very nicely equipped and the accommodations were very wrll laid out and had very comfortable couches and beds too. We seen a fox, moose (2), and numerous very pretty birds in the neighborhood and really enjoyed ou r stay overall."

"We had a peaceful few days at this property. It's very remote and the accommodations are very basic. Kitchen is not very well equipped, cleanliness wasn't up to my standards, especially when considering the high cleaning fee that is included in the booking. However, the beds were clean and pretty comfortable, the surroundings are beautiful and it is very peaceful. Fishing and hiking nearby, but not walking distance. You'll need to drive to everything. There is internet, but it is very spotty. If you need to work or do school from your getaway, you'll need to find somewhere else to stay. Since I wanted the teens to unplug for a few days, this really fit our need."

"The place needs some finishing in the basement and some windows could not be opened. One of the bedrooms was in that basement and one of the bathrooms was in that basement. Not very convenient. They did a secondary background check that required me to list all the people's names that were staying with me. It was embarrassing and it was not on the listing. I would not stay with them again because of the secondary background check."

"We have done several vacation homes and this was the first I've been unhappy with. The upkeep and 3rd party management on this cabin is questionable. I asked for early check-in and although I understand it is never guaranteed, I was told that the property needed a once over inspection that would be done by 1: 30pm. I called around noon and advised we would be arriving around 1: 05pm and they said we were fine to check in. When we arrived, it was clear we had not been told the truth, becasue there were no signs of anyone being on the property for sometime. It had snowed a week or so before our arrival and there were no vehicle tracks of anykind and my husband had to shovel the deck. Although the place allows dogs and that was great, I believe for the price of the cleaning fee, the cabin could have been cleaned way better. There were cobwebs (old ones too) down in the unfinished basement room, which was outside the 3rd bedroom. So although we had intended on using that bedroom and bathroom for privacy, it was not used. There was a glass in one of the bedrooms upstairs that had obviously been sitting there awhile with hard crustation of some sort in it. Towels had been sitting there and smelled dingy. We rewashed every kitchen item we used prior to us using. There was food stuck on some things and oil/grease on some of the baking items. My husband found a vacuum that hadn't been emptied in sometime as well, but he used it to vacuum the floor and couches to remove some of the hair and dirt. I completely understand that things would not be totally fresh when no one has been there, however being told we couldn't check in because someone had to do a once over and finding what we did wasn't professional. The bright side is that Fairplay is very close, so if you need something you can easily find it in town. The full size bed upstairs was plush and comfortable, quiet neighborhood, good cell service and you definitely need 4 wheel drive. If we had been told the truth and the place had better upkeep and cleanliness, it would have made the stay better."

"What's not to love about this place? Impossible to answer hehe it's the dreamed gateway cabin, in the middle of the woods. We went in Winter, the snow was very deep. You MUST have appropriated snow tires or chains to drive up the mountain, it's required by law and needed otherwise you won't make it up. The cabin is just as the pictures, the drive way gets cleaned up if it snows too much. They have a few sled and other toys to have some fun in the snow. Everything inside was very clean, the sheets smelled good. It was a little uncomfortable sleeping due to the height but the bedroom were very cozy and the cabin felt homie. I am already missing those super fun days I spent there and can't wait to get the chance to go back again!"

"Overall our experience here gave us the getaway we needed. We were able to enjoy the feeling of seclusion and the joy of silence. Only had a few things we wished were better: - beds were a bit on the firm side (personal preference) - pillows a bit on the flat (personal preference) - one room seemed to have a tiny draft. I dreamed of a White Christmas in a cute comfy cabin, and this place delivered!"
