Philadelphia International Airport is around a 15 minutes drive to Downtown. From there, it's another 25 minutes to the university. La Salle is close to Germantown, with a range of European-style architecture and breweries.
Increasingly, the city is being recognized as one of the world's most interesting centers for creativity. You'll notice plenty of street art, thanks to the city-sponsored Mural Arts Program. What's more, you won't spend a dime. There's a free tour available from the society which will allow you to see the best of it.
Philly is also well known for its excellent research laboratories, with plenty of museums that the public can enjoy. The Wagner Free Institute of Science specializes in natural history, and dates from the 19th century.
One of the most famous local landmarks is the Eastern State Penitentiary, with a dark past that has led to legends of it being haunted. There's a special event here every Halloween, but you can take a tour throughout the year. You should also, of course, see the iconic Liberty Bell in Independence National Historic Park.
