Best Hiking Trails in Grandfather Mountain State Park

The park has 12 miles of challenging trails which have hikers clambering over rocks and up ladders in steeper parts. For those up for the challenge, the diversity and sheer magnificence of the scenery more than makes up for the difficulty in getting there.

  • 1. Black Rock Trail

Meander through a forest of spruce and hardwood trees and get a glimpse of the spectacular mountain peaks and swinging bridge. Hike on and find yourself atop MacRae Peak or Attic Window Peak enjoying the serenity of the countryside below.

  • 2. Cragway Trail

The pink and purple sea of rhododendrons and blueberries is particularly lovely on this trail, as are the impressive views of Boone Bowl and Storyteller's Rock, but only after a steep and strenuous climb to the top of the trail. It may be hard going, but you'll soon be reliving the experience back at your Grandfather Mountain State Park cabins.

  • 3. Daniel Boone Scout Trail

This 3-mile trail ascends to the top of Calloway Peak, which at 5,946 feet is the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You'll need ladders and cables to reach the top of this difficult climb. The phenomenal views reward a can-do spirit.
