Methodology: How This Guide Was Produced

In order to rank the national parks in the contiguous U.S., three data points were researched: the median nightly price for nearby accommodation, likelihood of consistent crowds, and convenience of travel. After obtaining the raw data, each data point was assigned a representative numerical value between 5 and 10, with 5 representing the lowest data point and 10 representing the highest data point. The hypothetical "perfect score" would be 30 out of 30. The following equation was used in order to calculate this for each factor:

Score(i) = 5 Â· (x(i) - xmin ) / (xmax - xmin ) + 5

Affordability Score: Exclusive internal HomeToGo price data was used to find the median cost per night per person for vacation accommodations in the area surrounding each park during 2026. The area with the lowest median nightly price for vacation accommodations was awarded a maximum score of 10, and the remaining locations were awarded a score of 5 or higher. Prices are subject to change.

Crowds Score: Annual visitor figures (2025 or the most recent year available) and park size in acres were collected for each U.S. national park. To account for differences in seasonal accessibility, visitation totals were normalized by adjusting for the number of months during which each park is generally accessible to standard visitors. These figures were then combined with park size to reflect how visitor numbers relate to overall park area. The park least likely to experience consistent crowding received a score of 10, and the remaining locations were awarded a score of 5 or higher.

Convenience Score: For each park, travel convenience was assessed based on elements such as proximity to major transport hubs and ease of road access. This was combined with internal HomeToGo data on the volume and availability of nearby vacation rental accommodations. The location with the strongest combination of accessibility and accommodation availability was awarded a maximum score of 10, and the remaining locations were awarded a score of 5 or higher.
