Ski in Montana: Top Destinations

Montana Promises Fresh Powder and Perfect Piste

Despite being the country's fourth largest state, Montana has a resident population of a mere 1 million people. As such, its famed ski resorts boast more acres per skier than any other area in the U.S. Known for its "wide open spaces," Montana's terrain, found primarily in the western part of the state, delivers variety for all skill levels.

The Best Ski Resorts in Montana

The Best Ski Resorts in Montana

Some would argue that with the remarkably short lift line waits, and expansive, varied terrain, Montana offers some of the preeminent skiing and boarding in all of the United States. Winter sports enthusiasts love the variety that is available in Montana ski resorts, not just in terms of terrain but for accommodations, dining, and entertainment. Gorgeous views, striking vistas, and exceptional wilderness adventure await in the mountain towns and resorts of this wondrous state. Additionally, all of this is attainable at a price point that everyone can appreciate. Whether you are looking for a world-class five-star experience or a simple budget-friendly ski getaway, you will find it in Montana.

  • 1. Big Sky

This ski resort is nicknamed "The Biggest Skiing in America" for a reason. Big Sky's nearly 6,000 skiable acres and a vertical drop of more than 4,000ft. make for a fantastic winter adventure. Everything from beginner lessons to extreme winter sports exploits, quaint and cozy eateries to fine dining atop Andesite Mountain, are available at the tips of your poles in Big Sky.

  • 2. Whitefish

A charming historic town with stunning views of Whitefish Lake set against a mountain backdrop, Whitefish makes an incredible first impression. Beyond the town itself, equally impressive slopes deliver opportunities for all ski and board levels. Here you will find structured lessons, both group and private, affordable daycare for non-ski aged children, and 3,000 acres of beginner to expert terrain. Most convenient of all, it is all accessible via a free shuttle.

  • 3. Red Lodge Mountain

Exceptional skiing is the name of the game at Red Lodge Mountain. Indeed, anyone interested in the glitz and fluff associated with some of the major ski resorts should look elsewhere. Tucked in amongst the peaks of the Bear Tooth Mountains you will delight in finding reasonably priced lift tickets, possibly the shortest lift lines in the state, 69 beautifully maintained runs, and a quaint yet sophisticated downtown village.

Family Friendly Ski Resorts in Montana

Family Friendly Ski Resorts in Montana

A ski trip with the family can present challenges but also offers memories that will last a lifetime. Two major airports in Whitefish and Bozeman make for simple travel and transfer to most of the best ski areas in Montana. Taking into account the ages and skill levels of your traveling tribe members, lessons, mixed terrain, budget-friendly accommodations, off-mountain entertainment, and suitable dining options are all factors to take into consideration during planning. Luckily, Montana has numerous family-friendly resorts that provide all of the above and more.

  • 1. Moonlight Basin

Located in the northern basin of Big Sky's Lone Peak, Moonlight Basin used to be run independently of Big Sky. The two have since merged and opened up an amazing amount of adventure to Moonlight Basin's longtime fans. The world-class skiing and snowboarding that you will uncover during a visit here will delight even the most experienced in your crowd. However, adventure awaits even non-skiers with ice skating, snow-shoeing, dog sledding, and tubing all possible. There is also a family area in the Moonlight Lodge, with shuffleboard, pool tables, snacks, and more.

  • 2. Blacktail Mountain

Due to its unique orientation, the base of Black Mountain Resort is actually at the top of the mountain. Beginners and experts alike start their day with a top to bottom run without ever having to get on a lift. This affordable resort offers much of what Montana skiing represents: family fun, modest prices, easy accessibility, and variety. The views alone, extending across the stunning shores of Flathead Lake and the mountains beyond, are worth the visit.

  • 3. Teton Pass

A relatively small resort at only 400 skiable acres, this was a wonderful place for new skiers and boarders to learn and develop skills. The Teton Pass resort closed after the 2017-2018 season, and while its re-opening date is not yet determined, it will likely remain an excellent family ski destination when it does open. There is a decent amount of hike-to and back country skiing available here even with the resort closed, which might not be for everyone, but will certainly appeal to families looking for some true DIY adventure on skis.
