Oxford is very close to the huge Holly Springs National Forest, which offers kayaking, hiking, and camping. One of Mississippi's largest reservoirs, Sardis Lake, is also close by, but if you'd prefer to explore history and culture, Memphis is only 80mi. away.
1. Getting There
Driving is a popular option for getting to Ole Miss, and the nearest large airport is in Memphis. If you're driving to campus book your guest parking permit before leaving home. Oxford University Transport buses run frequently from the town center out to the University campus.
2. University Museum
Ole Miss's museum has an impressive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, scientific instruments and folk art. In addition, it regularly hosts traveling exhibitions from other prominent galleries across the country. Admission is free, with guided tours available on request. The University also owns Rowan Oak, a historic house close by which was home to Pulitzer Prize winning author William Faulkner.
3. Holly Springs National Forest
Holly Springs is so huge that visitors will have no difficulty in finding their own patch of forest to kick back and relax. Take a hike by the river, fish in one of the many lakes, camp overnight or just enjoy a picnic in the unspoiled forest. Chewalla Lake Recreation Area features a beach, perfect for cooling off on hot summer days.
