The college benefits from its marvelous opportunities for discovering local nature. In the nearby surroundings you have Hiawatha National Forest and the Gwinn State Forest Area. Very close to Marquette is beautiful Lake Superior, which is a wonderful spot for water sports, sunbathing, and swimming.
Sawyer International Airport is a mere 30-minute drive away, passing along M-553. The airport itself is a short distance from Gwinn State Forest Area, and so nature enthusiasts can benefit from exploring this splendid wilderness before heading to their accommodation if they wish.
Aside from Gwinn State, the enormous Hiawatha National Forest is where you'll find seemingly endless nature trails—the park is almost 900,000 acres! In July, the Hiawatha Music Festival is a fantastic folk music event held here. The coves at Presque Isle Park look out across mighty Lake Superior, and you'll find plenty of opportunities for fun on the water. Head to nearby Munising for kayaking, hikes around waterfalls, and even a glass-bottom shipwreck tour.
The university is at the heart of the town of Marquette. The museums here include Marquette Maritime Museum, where you can also tour the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, and the Michigan Iron Industry Museum. Around the easy-to-walk downtown area are a number of great bars and restaurants. Be sure to try the local whitefish, often baked as part of a hearty, tasty potato and veggie dish.
