History and beauty at your Malta vacation rental
Malta’s beaches, natural beauty, and fascinating history make it a popular destination for visitors to the Mediterranean. Located just south of Sicily, Malta consists of three islands, the largest - and most visited - of which is Malta Island. Major attractions include the port city of Valletta, the ancient city of Mdina, the beautiful Blue Lagoons, and the many beaches. Those with a Malta vacation rental can enjoy all these and more, all while unwinding in the laid back Maltese atmosphere.
Getting to Malta
Malta’s three islands are served by Malta International Airport, which is located on Malta Island. From there, you can take public transport to other areas of the island, or to the port, where there is a regular ferry to the island of Gozo and the occasional ferry to Comino. While bus services across Malta Island are good, it’s recommended that you rent a car during your stay in one of the many Malta vacation rentals if you want to explore the island’s more remote attractions, such as the natural beauty of its beaches, cliffs and inlets.
Weather in Malta
Malta has arguably the best climate in the world. More than 3,000 hours of sunshine hit the islands each year, and even during winter, the sun shines. December brings some 175 hours of sunshine alone. It does rain in Malta, but not too often, only in the winter, and rain showers tend to be short bursts rather than heavy rainfall. Summers are long and dry, but temperatures are more than manageable. Still, make sure you have a good supply of sun cream in your Malta vacation home.
There are great things to do at every turn in Malta, a country that is full of history, cultural cities, extensive natural beauty, and an array of recreational activities. Whatever your interests are, you’re sure to find it catered for during your stay at your Malta vacation rental.
Start your exploring in Valletta, Malta’s capital city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has many buildings that date back to the 16th century and many great attractions. St. John's Cathedral was built between 1572 and 1577 and boasts a stunning interior, and also has two famous works of art by the Italian artist Caravaggio.
Elsewhere in Valletta is the stunning Grand Master's Palace. Take a tour of the beautiful state rooms and take a look at the armoury, featuring pieces worn by the knights, the former residents of the palace. The Upper Barrakka Gardens are also highlights; they’re located on the highest point of the city and offer great views and a lovely place to take a stroll.
Thirty minutes from Valletta is Mdina, a well-preserved city that has some 3,000 years of history under its belt. Visit St. Paul’s Cathedral and stop by the Cathedral Museum. The real reason to visit Mdina is to stroll around the city. The medieval, winding streets are a step back in time. Make sure you check out the great views from the city walls, which are among the best in Malta.
Malta’s extensive natural beauty is there to be enjoyed, so try and get active during your stay. The water is warm and inviting here - go for long swims or try your hand at other watersports, such as kayaking, paragliding, and sailing.
Malta’s annual events
Malta is big on its festivals, and there’s likely to be something on during your stay at your Malta vacation rental. There are big, local festivals such as the ones that celebrate the arts, and other smaller affairs dotted around the islands.
Local favourites are Santa Marija and Mnarja, both of which occur in the summer, as well as the fiestas held by villages across the islands. These are big celebrations and are great to witness if you’re visiting your Malta vacation home when they’re on.
Other festivals include the Malta Jazz Festival, which brings international and domestic artists to the Valletta each July for three nights of great music and greater fun. In autumn, Malta celebrates Festival Mediterranea on the island of Gozo, during which music performances, art exhibitions, and plenty more take place.
Held in Valletta is the Malta Arts Festival, which takes place between July and August and is the biggest cultural event in the country. Art, music, dance, and theater performances are all part of the occasion.
