Pura Lingsar's towering temple roofs rise into the sky over the surrounding rice paddies. Considered to be Lombok's most sacred site, the compound was constructed by King Anak Agung Ngurah in 1714. The temples cater to multiple religious followings; Hindus and a local Islamic practice known as Wektu Telu.
The temple devoted to the latter religion is home to an eel-filled lily pond. It is considered good luck to fatten them up with hard-boiled eggs sold at the stalls here. The 1720 complex Pura Meru is home to 33 miniature shrines dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Three sacred Indonesian mountains; Rinjani, Agung and Bromo are also venerated at the site.
