Best Hiking Trails in Liberty State Park
This urban park is more about gentle walks than countryside hikes but with scenery which is just as spectacular. With plenty of hotels near Liberty State Park in Jersey City or Manhattan, it's easy to spend an afternoon strolling in the Park before returning to the bright lights of the city.

1. Boardwalk
By far the most popular walk in Liberty State Park is the boardwalk along the perimeter of the park. Along the way, you will be treated to views over Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, with the possibility of taking a detour to the nature trail area.

2. Freedom Way
The network of paths which occupy the land between the main road and the river offer the perfect place for walking, birdwatching or even more active pursuits such as roller skating.

3. Empty Sky Memorial
One of the Park's more thought-provoking walks is through the Empty Sky Memorial, New Jersey's monument to the events of 9/11. Walk through the tunnel created by the large steel panels to see Manhattan framed at one end. Along the walls, there are lists of people from New Jersey killed in the attacks.

Although there's not the option for the family to stay in cabins in Liberty State Park, there are lots of other outdoor things to do instead, both on land and water. Whether you are an active family, or prefer to be inside and learning, you will find something to suit at Liberty State Park.

1. Hudson Cruises
Probably the most popular thing to do is to take one of the many ferry cruises which depart from the docks at the east of the Park and sail around the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Visitors can get off the ferry and tour both of these islands at leisure, before returning to Liberty State Park.

2. Barbecues and Picnics
Although there are no cabins in Liberty State Park that doesn't mean no grilling or barbecuing. Reserve one of the grill spots in advance and get together with a group of friends to enjoy great food and drink with unrivalled city views.

3. Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal
Until 1954 this impressive building saw the immigration of millions into the US. It is now home to a small museum, telling the story of US immigration.
