As Detroit is famously the center of America's car-making industry, you'll want to make sure to see where it all started at the old Ford car plant. There are regular free guided tours with expert volunteers, and the onsite shop stocks a range of car-related gifts and souvenirs.
Detroit's other main claim to fame is being the home of Motown Records. The former home of the label's founder, Berry Gordy, is now a museum. Join a tour to learn about his life and the famous acts that were part of "Hitsville, USA."
Windsor, Ontario, is just across the river from Detroit, and many visitors take the opportunity to set foot on Canadian soil on a day trip from Detroit. Check what paperwork you'll need in advance, and cross the Ambassador Bridge into Canada. You could also venture further to London, Ontario, ("the Forest City"), or Stratford to catch some world-class theater.
