The island gets its name from the abundance of wild cranberries that grow there. You’ll need to park your car at Mount Desert Island and hop on the ferry to take you over – that’s how secluded you’ll be.
Vacation homes and cottages are usually directly on the waterfront, and some have their own private beach and dock. You can get around the island either by bike or the free shuttle bus. The rentals are typically large, New England-style homes, and easily accommodate two or more families. The vacation rental prices are reasonable.
