Cheyenne is Wyoming's largest city and state capital, and choosing house rentals here provides a perfect base for exploring the state. Cheyenne is a low-rise city, with less of the hustle and bustle in larger cities. Choose city center apartment lodgings, or head into the outlying areas for larger, detached houses. Head a little further out of town, and you could even spend your vacation at your very own ranch.

Locally-sourced Goodness
Cheyenne may not be the metropolis that other cities are, but there's no shortage of great food either. Some of the best options take Wyoming's home-grown beef or bison, served as no-nonsense steaks, burgers, or ribs. One of the best downtown options is Poor Richard's, which has a long history of dishing up American classics like lobster tails, filet mignon, and strip steaks.
One of the best casual dining options in Cheyenne is 2 Doors Down, a local independent burger restaurant dishing up family-friendly classics like burgers, tacos, salads, shakes, and cheesecakes. An unique meal option is the Luxury Diner, housed in a converted trolley car that supposedly ran on Cheyenne's streets. Visit at breakfast and set yourself up for a day's sightseeing with hash browns, breakfast burgers, or eggs Benedict.
Boot Spotting, Mountain Biking, or Gardens?
The laid-back nature of Cheyenne is ideal for a family vacation, and there's plenty of family-friendly activities to engage the kids. A great way to start your exploration of Cheyenne is to go boot spotting. Eight-foot-tall ceramic cowboy boots painted by local artists are in various locations around town—can the kids spot them all? There are 25 Big Boots to "collect", so pick up a map from the Visitors Center and hit the streets. Don't forget your camera or smartphone; these Big Boots are the ideal local photo opportunity.
Just west of the city is Curt Gowdy State Park, which provides action-packed days for kids of all ages. Bring some bikes to explore the miles of trails, or tear it up in one of the four mountain bike areas. Go fishing in the rivers or lakes, or just take a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet. Back in town, the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens is another green space worth a visit. There's nine acres of formal gardens, herb gardens, a labyrinth, and the Paul Smith Children's Village with sand pits, a secret garden, and an interestng prairie discovery area.
Step Back into the Wild West
Cheyenne first developed as a frontier town, and there's still a distinct cowboy vibe to many of the city's visitor attractions. One of the best places to start your exploration of Cheyenne's past is at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. There's an impressive display of covered wagons, steam engines, art, and lots of information about the history of rodeo. There's more of the same over at the Wyoming State Museum, which also has an interesting section about dinosaur excavations in the local area.
If you'd prefer to get out into the great outdoors, the Terry Bison Ranch puts you in the saddle for a cowboy adventure. Riders of all abilities can saddle up for a ride out onto the prairie to see the ranch's impressive herds of bison. Alternatively, take a seat on the ranch's train tour to see not only the bison, but ostriches and camels too. Stop off at the gift shop for some unique souvenirs, or some freshly-prepared bison meat to enjoy back at your vacation rental.
Country Living
Cheyenne's most famous event is the annual Frontier Days festival, held on the last week of July. Since 1897 people have been flocking to the city to show off their rodeo skills, enjoy the Grand Parade, or just soak up the down home atmosphere, live country music, and homestyle cooking. With around 200,000 people attending the event annually, it's one of the world's largest rodeos.
Following Frontier Days, the Laramie County Fair is held at the beginning of August. This is a lower-key celebration of the best of the region's livestock and agriculture, but one which still delivers all the fun you expect at the fair. Where else could you watch pig wrestling, check out vintage tractors, and witness the thrills and spills of a demolition derby? Kids will love the colorful, lively fairgrounds, and food trucks, ice cream, and many other fun treats will keep everyone happy.
