Part of the world-famous Route 66 stretches across northern Arizona guaranteeing some incredible scenery and the most quirky examples of Americana along the way. The I-40 highway, Route 66 being the old highway that runs below it, takes you through typical towns like Seligman, Kingman, or Jerome and natural wonders like Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, and the Painted Desert.
One of earth's most impressive natural wonders, the Grand Canyon has many routes and observation points to explore by road or on foot to experience mind-blowing scenery. It's also the perfect extension to a Route 66 road trip. From the canyon's eastern rim head northwards through Navajo territory to the mystifying desert-rock formations and vast panoramas of the Monument Valley.
Continuing south, or as a stand-alone road trip, the route from Flagstaff to Tombstone by way of Phoenix and Tucson promises an array of locations and miles of Arizona vistas. It will also take you through the state's diverse geography, from national forests to arid expanses, through high-elevation deserts, and mountain backdrops. This is also old-west country, with ghost towns and historic mining outposts galore.
