California dreaming with a vacation home in Aptos
Aptos is a small town in Santa Cruz County, just south of San Francisco. This charming coastal town has lots to offer visitors of all ages, from beaches to forests and much more besides.
Explore the farmers' market
As a coastal town, most of the restaurants specialize in serving fresh seafood but Aptos' culinary highlight is its weekly farmers' market, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017. Held every Saturday morning at the town's Cabrillo College, stalls feature local, organic produce including cheeses, fish, meats, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables and honey - perfect for taking back to your vacation rental and cooking up a delicious lunch.
If you are visiting Aptos with kids, then you will spend most of your time on the town's beautiful beaches. The Seacliff State Beach has a fishing pier, which is open to the public but its most famous attraction is a half-sunk concrete ship, the SS Palo Alto. This was an experimental vessel, built in the 1940s, which now acts as a reef for local wildlife. Seacliff State Beach is also home to a visitor center, where you can learn more about Pacific beach wildlife.
Redwood forests and beyond
The highlight of any visit to Aptos is the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, a vast redwood forest with over 30 miles of hiking and cycling trails. The toughest trails can take you up to 2,600ft - well worth it for the view of the forest and the California coastline beyond. Back in town, you can learn about the history of Aptos, and the important role played by both the forest and the ocean in its success, at the Aptos History Museum.
