During the spring and fall there are lively festivals which attract lots of visitors, so expect a buzzing atmosphere with stalls selling crafts and food trucks serving an array of delicious food. There are open spaces to play sports and there's also a kids' play park. Another highlight of the park is the Tinglewood tree carvings - including over 30 beautifully carved creations of people and animals staring back at you, which will make you feel like you're in a fantasy land.
History lovers must see the American Village for the performances and speeches that teach you about the American Revolution. There are replica buildings, including the Oval Office, and beautiful grounds to explore. The village also hosts festivals throughout the year - the tulip festival is especially captivating with rows of colorful flowers laid out as far as the eye can see.
Leave your accommodation near the University of Montevallo and head to Shelby County's Oak Mountain State Park. It's a fantastic area for hikers with over 25mi. of trails ranging from easy to moderate. Treetop Nature Trail is an elevated boardwalk ideal for birdwatching. Don't miss the good work being done by the Alabama Wildlife Center - the oldest and largest of its kind in the state.
